Summary/Abstract: The paper is a contribution to the stream of research on metatext, a phenomenon tightly bound to the plane of language use. It collects and displays expressions which speakers use to signalize a violation of standards of linguistic behaviour: brutalnie mówiąc ‘brutally speaking’ and others. These expressions are structures of different builds and different degrees of lexicalization – from trite sayings to ad-hoc syntactic constructions – which are attested more than once in the examined corpus of contemporary press statements. Pragmatic equivalence of these expressions allows for their mutual substitution in texts. Semantically, a few clear-cut groups can be seen: expressions which characterize the manner of speech (with the verb mówić ‘to speak’), expressions which define the speaker’s attitude in a given interaction, and expressions which apologize for the choice of words. All of them are introduced into texts deliberately, with the intention of having a persuasive effect on the listener.
