Summary/Abstract: In the second half of the 19th century the French illustrated press acquires a development unknown until then and a new category of artists comes into being: the special artists, whose role is to report on different events both in France and in far-away countries. Starting with the Crimean war, covering conflicts all over the world turns into a focal point of interest for the readers, who are provided with the feeling that they actually take part in the event when they read the articles. Based on the figure of Charles Yriarte, a special artist working for the “Monde illustré” journal during the Spanish-Moroccan war, this paper aims at analyzing the image of the artist as a war correspondent.
