Summary/Abstract: To deny the political sovereign the attention he deserves cannot fail to have serious consequences, and not just for the historian. One day, as John Kirkby, tutor to the seven-year-old Edward Gibbon, recited the thanksgiving prayer in the parish church of Putney, he forgot—“most unluckily”, as his subsequently famous pupil wrote—to mention the name of King George II. “His patron,” Gibbon continues, “a loyal subject, dismissed him with some reluctance and a decent reward; and how the poor man ended his days I have never been able to learn.”
