Summary/Abstract: Since 1947 international standardizing activities have been carried out by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). Within ISO international terminology standards have been prepared by more than 250 technical committees. Responsible for standardization of terminology principles is technical committee 37 (ISO/TC 37) with its four subcommittees that issued since its creation in 1952 many standards and recommendations. In 1971 Unesco founded the International Information Centre for Terminology with the objective to support and co-ordinate international co-operation in the field of terminology. In 1988 TermNet, the International Network for Terminology was founded. Today they form together with ISO/TC37, GWT and IITF socalled "Global Group" which organizes, coordinates and promotes terminological activities all over the world. Archivists use a specific terminology and in order to establish communication, the vocabulary must be accurately defined. Any discussion of archival theory should be based on careful definition of terms. Most of archivists will agree on the importance of accepting and creating common definitions and descriptions for archival terms generally used in archival theory and international coopartion. The author presents in her article the attempts for the preparation of the multilingual dictionary of archival terminology in the framework of the ICA as well as some other terminology glossaries. The lack of an appropriate dictionary of archival terminology in Slovenian archival theory and practice that archivists could use by their daily work is presented in the article as well.
