THE INSTITUTIONAL RELATION BETWEEN THE MITROPOLIA OF ESZTERGOM AND THE ROMANIAN UNIATE CHURCH FROM TRANSYLVANIA. THE 1850 EPISODE

Summary/Abstract: The author investigates a part of the institutional history of the Catholic Church of Hungary and Transylvania between 1821 and 1850. The analysis permits a perspective upon the way in which the Church mediated an institutional dialogue between the leaders of the two churches in the age of unilateral claims that culminated with the revolution of 1848, and degenerated into civil war between Romanians and Hungarians in Transylvania. The study presents the double institutional intermediation of the Catholic Church in the national Synod of Hungary: the analysis of the intermediation between State and Church, and the inter-ecclesiastical dialogue between the Catholic Church of Hungary with the seat in Esztergom and the United Church of Transylvania with the seat in Blaj under the circumstances provided by the fact that the State interfered in the Church issues. The author discusses the role played by the Church official speech in the Synod with the view to strengthening the confessional and cultural identity of the Transylvanian Romanians between 1821 and 1850.
