Summary/Abstract: The First World War represented a great challenge for the health service of the belligerant states. Misery, poverty, poor hygiene favored the outbreak of diseases and infections. The study presents the general features of the medical service in the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy during the Great War. It is an attempt to outline a frame of wounded and doctors, nurses and unqualified staff, field hospitals, but also of medical advances.
