Summary/Abstract: A major editorial event that has just taken place in France could be regarded as one of the most important of the decade: the completion of Les Lieux de mémoire (Places of Memory), the collective work directed by Pierre Nora, which comprises seven large volumes and began publication in 1984. More than 130 reunited essays and more than 100 historians were mobilised for this monumental work that aimed to delineate a “vast topology of French symbolism” by making an inventory of the places where national memory is incarnated.
