Summary/Abstract: Amateur theatre is distinct from professional theatre. The present study intends to bring a brief historical view on the appearance and development of the amateur theatre, and it describes the specific forms of manifestation and its aesthetics. Even the definition lacks clarity and research should take into account this form of performance, focusing especially on its social implication / importance. The identity of amateur theatre may be defined through the identity of the amateur interpret / player. Thus, the diffuse history of this kind of theatre distinguishes two important stages in its evolution – the development during the Middle Ages and its evolution since the beginning of the 17th century, being a kind of contrasting folio for the contemporary phenomenon that helps to understand its historical dynamics.
