Summary/Abstract: It has been opined by a large group of academic teachers that contemporary A-level school-leavers are increasingly less and less prepared for beginning university studies in the chosen field. An increasing gap between the state of scientific knowledge and what is taught in schools undoubtedly exists. There is an observable incoherence of the conveyed content between school and university education, often already evident on the school-level. According to my ongoing research conducted for around 20 years, this state of disjunction fosters negative transfer. Other factors influencing this low level of knowledge among the secondary schools’ alumni include popularization of high-school education and its resulting general mass-character, a flawed system of creating curricula, multiple-choice tests and exams, little attention being given to research on teaching and instruction methods in a given subject and other similar issues. In conclusion one can argue that there is a need to appeal to conscience of some “grand scholars” who fail to acknowledge subject didactics and, thus, lead to a growing gap between learning at secondary schools and tertiary education received at universities.
