Summary/Abstract: AbstractThe article represents the first part of an extensive study on the Soviet policyof organized migration. The author focuses on a case study of the formerMoldavian Soviet Socialist Republic, covering the first year of the Sovietoccupation of Bessarabia (1940-41) and the postwar period, 1944 up to1956. The main sources used for this article are new disclosed documentsfrom the National Archive of the Republic of Moldova, concerning thevarious specialized institutions that dealt with the organized migration oflabour force from the territories of the present day Republic of Moldova toindustrial enterprises located mainly in Russia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan. Theauthor gives details not only related to the various strategies to fulfill the plansof labour force, but also to the cadres that worked for the above-mentionedinstitutions. The article contains data on the specific industries and regionstowards which organized migrants from MSSR were directed as well as detailspertaining to the restrictions imposed by the authorities, in the majority ofcases the migrants being prohibited to take their families mainly because theindustrial regions of the Soviet Union had a special regime.
