Summary/Abstract: By an anthropological study of 57 skeletons (10 children, 4 adolescents, 19 women and 24 men) from the necropolis in the locality "Kaleto" in the vicinity of the village Odartsi, Dobrich region, data are obtained on physical type, racial specifity, life expectancy and morbidity of a medieval population in Dobrudja. The average expected age for the grown individuals is about 44 years, and for the women the average life expectancy is four years less. The studied population is characterized by a combination of solidity of lower jaws, rough eye-brow relief with high and round orbs, broad and flat nose-base and little pits in the lower part of the nasal cave. The height both of men (166,3 cm) and of women (155,6 cm )is at the upper limit of the category "middle height". European features, characteristic for the classical mediterranean and nordic racial types, are predominent with different degrees of mongoloid mixtures. The corelation between the racial types and their variations proves the participation both of Slavs and Protobulgarians in the ethnogenesis of this population. There are specific traces of hard sabre cranium traumas, which had caused death. Their high frequency and localization in the frontal-parietal and the facial parts of the skull could be explained by the participation of men from the medieval settlement near Odartsi in hard battles, most probably during Pecheneg invasions in early XI-th century.
