Summary/Abstract: The main aim of this paper is focused on burial and bereavement in Jewish culture and theirsocial and religious functions. Its goal is to study hidden ritual functions and explore the senseof the rite. Methods used for this research are based on the anthropological theory ofB. Malinowski’s functionalism. It conducts a survey of the Sacred Society Chevra kadishaactivities existing within Jewish communities all around the world. Its status has been veryimportant. It deals mainly with the Sacred Society in Prague and its development in time. Thework studies rituals connected with death and the period of mourning which comes after afuneral. It also presents the evidence of members of the Jewish community in Pragueobserving the habits connected with burying. Finally, the thesis reveals the hidden functionsof the ritual on the grounds of Malinowski’s theory of functionalism.
