Catalonia and the pursuit of independence: factors affecting separatism of the Catalans

Summary/Abstract: The subject of this paper is to discover, characterise and evaluate factors, which influence theCatalan society and effect the creation of nationalist aspirations and separatist tendencies inthe Spanish autonomous community – Catalonia. Based on the respondents’ answers, as wellas numerous secondary literature sources, a comparative analysis was developed. The analysisaims to understand why the Catalans would argue in favour of independence, the roots ofthese claims and the influences that can affect the mind-set of individuals and society fromdifferent aspects. The respondents were interviewed in the following areas: Characteristicsymbols for Catalonia and the Catalan people, Reasons of separatism, The initial awareness,Influence of the environment, Personal expression and attitude, Future expectations.
