Summary/Abstract: The paper is concerned with a study of onomastics. The author describes the history of onomastic research since the early 19th century. Names were the first to inspire the interest of historians dealing with the issue of old settlements. Linguists’ research was of an onomastic character and was used to illustrate the development of language. W. Taszycki was the first to make a breakthrough in the study of names, treating them as a legacy of past history and at the same time as a goldmine for philological studies. He made a complete classification of names based on their semiotics features. From the mid-20th century onomastics has come to gain relative autonomy as a sub-discipline of linguistics. Recent years, however, have witnessed emphasis on its interdisciplinary nature.
