Summary/Abstract: The problem of the amateur tourism material base development on the territory of the Soviet Union in 1960–1980s is studied on the example of Karelia. Based on the memoirs, personal diaries, and reports of camping trips’ participants a number of technical nuances of preparing necessary sport equipment ware revealed and described. In conditions of chronic deficiency in special industrial products tourists from the Soviet Union used handmade tourist equipment. Such performance speaks of the high level of motivation for amateur tourism and self-organization intrinsic to the people of the Soviet Union.
