Summary/Abstract: The article offers an analysis of Stanisław Brzozowski’s critical project, viewed from the standpoint of his conviction that Polish intelligentsia in the early years of 20th century was culturally backward. He sees the way to Polish maturity in our recognition of disguise of apparent modernity whereto we were not then-as-yet entitled. Owing to their most extensive access to a socialised individual’s mind, arts and criticism were to force the nineteenth-century Pole to become aware of his own specific experience of modernity. Today, it seems that it was not the incurable romanticism of Polish culture that posed the major challenge to Brzozowski’s project, but the ordinariness of life in a free world, which makes individuals indifferent to cultural dilemmas.
