Summary/Abstract: The article presents the concept of subjective theories observed in students preparing to be teachers of foreign languages and discusses such theories’ impact on the development of autonomy in a beginning teacher. The verification of subjective theories may be achieved by an in-depth reflection over one’s own teaching skills and tools, which should be cultivated in students from the earliest stage possible. The second part of the article presents the results of a survey conducted among students pursuing a pedagogical practice in French teaching, conducted in order to investigate the role of this teaching experience in the verification of subjective theories and the development of an autonomous attitude.
