Summary/Abstract: This paper is dedicated to the emotional-affective (affective) area of personality of a student of modern languages and literature. The affective variables consist of emotions which determine the relation of an individual to the self and the surroundings. In a questionnaire survey conducted by the author of this paper, personality types and models. motivation factors, emotional states accompanying the studies, and the selfconcept were empirically analysed. The study showed that students with very good academic performance differ from those with satisfactory one within the analysed factors. It was demonstrated that success in studying is favoured by: instrumental and integrative (internal) motivation, extroverted features of personality, conscientiousness, need of self-verification, and motive of self-correction.
