Summary/Abstract: The article suggests that the naxalite movement should be conceived of and examined as a specific part of the Indian political pluralism as well as of the Indian interest groups politics. There are important social and political features of the naxalite-Maoist insurgency that cannot be effectively grasped and assessed employing exclusively the security-centred approach. A conceptualization of the naxalite movement should be sensitive enough to the distinctively plural character and dynamics of the movement, both in its early (1967-1972) and more recent organizational forms. This is a precondition for a better understanding of variegated strategies pursued by the naxalite organizations.
