Summary/Abstract: The article is built around the question of the (un)flexibility of employment relations in Slovenia. The authors analyse data on employment and human resource development practices in four subsidiaries of multinational companies in Slovenia and complement this with statistical data and other research data to support the contention that employment practices in Slovenia are not similar to either the American nor German models but are uniquely Slovenian, including some original legitimating and motivating mechanisms. The authors emphasise the high functional and time flexibility of employment in Slovenia (also as a consequence of the co-operation of workers’ representative bodies in companies and the high level of internal integration of employees) that was possible to develop due to the high level of employment security or relative numerical rigidity of the employment system. This was the key point that enabled the development of (agreed) high functional and time as well as the limited numerical (in the form of fixed-term contracts) flexibility seen in Slovenian companies.
