Types of Genre Mix in the Modern Romance Novel

Summary/Abstract: Article is devoted to the mix of genres. The author relies on the postulates of communicative and socio-cognitive theories of genre. Some individuals confuse literary genres or subgenres with other kinds of literary entities, such as literary devices, fi gurative language, forms, or periods. Communicative and sociocognitive theories help to avoid confusion. The author understands the genre as a set of conventions concerning the relationship between author and addressee of the text. The author extends the defi nition of a communicative genre and has proposed to supplement by three plans of the genre: the plan for content, structure plan and the plan of perception. The definition of mix of genres is given in the article by the author. Genre mixing (contamination of the genre) _ a union in art-work elements of two or more genres, provided that genre features one of the genres remain dominant. Author described the infl uence of mix of genres on the multeity of genres and on the formation of new genres. The author assesses the mix of genres as: - a method for creating a new genre; - a method of evolution the genre. The mix of genres is the main method of the manifold types of novel. Genre mixing is carried out not chaotically. Genre mixing is carried out in accordance with the content and issues of artwork. This refl ects the infl uence of the internal action of the novel (which is associated with the plot-story eventfulness). The history of the concept of mix of genres had been explained in the article (German Romantic school, the Russian literary theory, Western communicative theory, etc.). Attention is paid to three forms of mix of genres. An internal genre mixing involves mixing different types of one genre. Between literary genus mixing involves mixing elements of various sorts. Inside literary genus mixing involves mixing elements of the genres of one genus. Many scholars, critics, philosophers, and others have invented a variety of systems for treating literature as a collection of genres; many have produced lists of genres and subgenres. Author proposes to classify artworks according to the criterion of genre mixing. Depending on the type of: - artworks with the internally genre mixing; - artworks with the inside literary genus mixing; - artworks with the between literary genus genre mixing; Depending on the complexity: - simple genre mixing; - multi level genre mixing. In the artwork both can be used different type of genre mixing. This leads to the phenomenon of multi-level genre mixing. Through a comparative analysis meta genre and mega genre, it was determined that in meta genre dominates between literary genus mixing, in mega genre dominates inside literary genus mixing. Genre mixing in meta novel is associated with the spreading of the essay and self-reflection. Duplex art construction of the meta novel suggests that in the foreground housed novelistic plot, while the second _ self-reflection plot.
