Summary/Abstract: The study analyzes the turn in reconsidering the medium of photography that took place in the 1980s. It is aimed at identifying the social and economic factors that influenced the development of a new attitude to the medium while exploring the activities of the Association of Lithuanian Art Photographers. The means and ways of self-education used by the photographers are discussed. The other focus of the study is on the artists’ reflections on photography, on the critical questions they posed to the tradition of modernist photography. Through the analyses of images, the following problems are highlighted: authorship, reference of photography to reality and indexicality.
