Summary/Abstract: Creating an effective European Research and Innovation Area is a major objective of the European Commission and at the same time a major challenge for all European Union countries. The main issues currently faced by the European countries in creating ER(I)A are the fragmentation of research communities, both at national and EU levels, and insufficient links between the academic and business worlds. The recent addition of ten New Member States (NMS) has brought both issues even more in the forefront.
