Summary/Abstract: Önéletírás by Kata Bethlen has been analysed from various aspects but there is still one layer of this literary work of art which has not really been studied, yet: the referential system of the text within the work. The purpose of this paper is to examine the system of referring backward and forward in Önéletírás as it plays an important role in ensuring cohesion. The elements of the referential system are the following: references backwards and forwards, references to the number of chapters in brackets, word-for-word repetitions, allusions to past or future events, hints and prophecies.
