Summary/Abstract: There have been different arguments on explaining the main reason of economic development differences among countries. This article examines four different hypotheses that try to explain the origins of economic development. These hypotheses are: (a) geography, (b) religion-culture, (c) institutions and (d) trust. After examining theoretical and empirical studies, it has been seen that researchers that put forth the importance of institutions and trust have revealed more reasonable theses because they analyze economic development in a more dynamic process. On the other hand, geography and religion-culture hypotheses have made more determinist explanations on the origins of economic development.
