Summary/Abstract: This article tells the story of the first Vietnamese, Ngo VinhLong, to attend Harvard as an undergraduate student in 1964. Long taught himself English by reading novels he purchased at an outdoor market translating them with an English-French dictionary. After coming to the states, he became one of the few Vietnamese to speak out against the war while residing in the U.S.
