Summary/Abstract: The following article analyses the birth and evolution of the violin from two perspectives, namely, its use in performing classical music and that in performing folk music. Because of this, the violin, considered to be the queen of all musical instruments, came to be represented in two different situations. The first one is as a soloist violin, important component of large orchestras performing classical music. The second one is as a local cetera used in performing folk music by folk music bands and traditional instrumentalist groups. So, there are two different situations given by the versions of use: the classic world and the traditional, folk world, two parallel universes which the violin serves as an instrument. The role of the violin in the Romanian music has been increasing the past two centuries, thanks to some talented local instrumentalists who used it in performing repertoires of the folk Romanian music in a sensitive and refined manner, giving them color and splendor, grandeur and immortality. Therefore, the following article is about how an instrument of Italian origin managed to adapt so well to the needs of expression of the Romanian music.
