Summary/Abstract: The study discusses questions related to the legal status of churches and other religious organisations in Hungary and issues of ecclesiastical law of the state. Following the introductory thoughts, it deals with freedom of conscience and freedom of religion, religious communities, the issues of established churches and organisations carrying out religious activities. An independent chapter covers various aspects of being recognised as a church, the terms of recognition, the recognition procedure, the register of ecclesiastical legal persons, and the reorganisation and termination of established churches and internal ecclesiastical legal persons. Finally, the study discusses the characteristics of ecclesiastical law of the Hungarian state, dwelling on the meanings of the term “ecclesiastical law of the state” and the branch of law character of ecclesiastical law of the state.
