Summary/Abstract: This dissertation constitutes hermeneutic studies into the ideal of education and the philosoph-ical and pedagogical values of the Chinese school of Mahayana Buddhism, referred to as Huayan. The author makes inquiries into them, delving into the basic texts of this school such as Avatamsaka Sūtra and the texts of Fazang, and also the activity of the principal representa-tives of it. This school, which is principally connected with Chan and Zen, is focused in its philosophical layer upon the properties of sūnyatā, developing in this aspect the ideas of Nāgārjuna, and in the pedagogical layer contains and precisely describes its ideal of education the form of bodhisattva, together with its stages of development, broadly accepted in the other schools of Mahayana Buddhism. Both the ideal of education itself, and the pedagogical values of this school are clearly aligned with a humanistic orientation in Western pedagogics.
