Summary/Abstract: Significant changes in the modern reality resulted in the necessity of rethinking the purpose of today’s higher education programs and showing new ways of potential development. The paper undertakes the attempt at describing the fundamental changes in social relationships with the particular consideration regarding the academic environment. New phenomenon such as generation y living in the chaotic climate of the rapid-fire culture and the modern-day market demand for soft skills are being analysed in the context of the present-day university mission. The observations presented in the paper indicate the necessity of profound changes to be introduced in higher education in order to meet the challenges of the modern societies based on knowledge. In these societies there is only one way to experience further progress of the higher education graduates and this is by improvement and refinement of the social skills of the students in addition to passing on the professional know-how. The introduction of new academic subjects, such as Academic good manners, offered for students of the Kielce University of Technology can be seen as an excellent example of meeting the new requirements. The aim of the program is to include the key aspects of good manners (one of the most important soft skills nowadays) in regular technical education, as a part of the humanistic development of the students. The paper describes the specifics of the program of the new subject given as a lecture to the first and six semester students, which take part in the project. The main conclusion is that the new concept is bound to help and to facilitate embracing the challenges of modern societies and to have a positive impact on the future developments in the social relationships.
