Summary/Abstract: In the late 18th and early 19th century a particular conception of the journal emerged within early Romantic German circles as a universal encyclopedia bringing together both art and sciences. This study follows the influence of this idea and its variants within the Central European and Czech context, where it gained ground, particularly in the case of Časopis českého Musea and Krok. These Czech periodicals had the basic characteristics of this kind of journal: their establishment is understood to be a culturally and nationally representative act, and their production is characterized by typical tension between the artistic and scientific elements. Above all they became important distributors of various forms of Romantic discourse.
