Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to identify liquidity regulation as a complementary element of capital-adequacy measures taken in the European banking system. The paper presents an analysis of the structure and functioning of the standards for liquidity regulation implemented both in the European Union and in Poland. It is the author’s view that the safety of the European banking sector depends on the introduction of both short-term and long-term European Union liquidity regulation measures. Rather than being an alternative to capital-adequacy measures, the liquidity measures will instead komplement them. Nevertheless, the method adopted for their implementation will significantly limit the flexibility of banking supervision authorities in the Member States in developing national regulation in this regard.
