Summary/Abstract: The mission of any university is not only to conduct educational and research, but also lifelong learning activity. A higher education system plays an extremely important role in the creation of a knowledge-based economy. The teaching programmes and educational offer of the University should be designed to encourage students to improve their skills, acquire new knowledge and skills at different levels and in different periods of life. The authors try to show that an institutional and curricular organization of a university should facilitate the implementation of lifelong learning, and its dimension is social rather than economic.
