Summary/Abstract: For Orthodoxy, the 19th century is a turning point as major changes have indeed occurred during this century. The ideas of the French Revolution, very famous during the period, have now managed to find a most practical ending. The peoples, craving freedom, equality and fraternity, decided to take destiny in their own hands and, thus, national states in the Balkan Peninsula were shaped. These newly-formed states later fought for creating national Churches where the specific ethos of each nation was taken into account. Starting with 19th century, national Churches identified themselves with the national history and culture of different orthodox nations.
