Summary/Abstract: The debates regarding the advantages/disadvantages of using translations as a tool in teaching/learning a foreign language have been very prolific. The pros and cons of the aforementioned issue comprise the opportunity to acquire the four main skills, to understand the inner aspects that articulate a language as well as the non-productive character of the technique, the intense contact with the native tongue while translating, the lack of communicative character of the translation process. The analysis of these controversies has proved the fact that translations need to be put into a more balanced perspective. Regardless of the way it is used – as a means in itself, for a professional translator or as a pedagogical tool for learning foreign languages, the translation is far from being a technique that hinders students from using the language creatively. The paper reviews the translation technique in its major points, from extreme approaches to a balanced one, brings arguments about it as having communicative characteristics and presents the reader with a number of difficulties that are encountered when using translations in the ESP/Legal English courses.
