Summary/Abstract: The motive of the study is an inferior place in the economics of irreversible changes occurring in the environment as a result of anthropogenic pressure. Defining irreversible change leads to the analysis of methods that are used in making decisions regarding the environment and also decisions causing irreversible changes. The aim of the discussion is to identify specific nature of irreversible changes in the environment and to draw attention to the consequent social costs. Economic decision support tools nowadays turn out to be insufficient and ineffective. The time factor plays an important role both in the cost-benefit analysis and in the economic valuation. However, in both cases, time horizon and discount rate usually do not take into account the actual preferences of society and the real consequences of environmental degradation.
