Summary/Abstract: The article presents issues under the theme “Economics and the Environment” and its place in the economic sciences as well as its role in the directions of changes in economic theory and economic policy. The authors focus on the economics of environmental protection and its derivatives disciplines as economics of the environment and natural resources and ecological economics. The article also presents the controversy about the links between these disciplines with environmental policy and sustainable development. The authors see the development of the economy of moderation – a paradigm which is in opposition to neoliberal policies and even equated with the economy of excess. By the economy of moderation should be understood knowledge, description of reality, the principles of formulating management objectives and policies for their implementation in terms of moderation and adapted to these tasks a new system of values. According to the authors, there is a strong resemblance of economy of moderation to the concept of sustainable development, promoted by the environmental movement, and the economics of environmental and ecological economics.
