Summary/Abstract: Operas originate in profane inspiration, courtier music and profane dramatic shows. Religious themes, related to Christ’s life, were originally banned from representation on the public stage. These were reserved to religious works such as oratorios. “The terrible mysteries of the Christian faith may not be by profane subjects adorned”, said Boileau. In order to break the ban, authors of opera librettos borrow from ancient mythology and from modern history themes such as descents to hell (Alcestis, Orpheus) or redemptive sacrifice (Iphigenia, La Traviata), concealing their Christian symbolism. The presence of Christian holy themes on a profane stage, though common during the 20th century (e.g. Jesus Christ Superstar), may still attract accusations of blasphemy or profanation.
