Summary/Abstract: This essay uses the methodology of mythocriticism for the analysis of literary images. Taking the studies of Jean-Jacques Wunenberger as a starting point, it focuses on the theme of the well in the poetry of Lorand Gaspar. Constellating the great archetypes of the imaginary (following Gaston Bachelard), the image of the well brings together a plurality of significations. It emphasizes the vital role of the desert, where it becomes a true center of life. By quenching thirst, it reveals the true self. It has also a nocturnal meaning, its stymphalized waters entering an underground relation with memory and death. Finally, it metaphorically describes the poetic creation as the “vertical word.”
