Summary/Abstract: Almost from the very beginning of his ministry as the Archbishop of San Salvador, Oscar Romero was involved in a multidimensional conflict, mainly with the government authorities, who could not accept a radical change in his pastoral priorities and their social consequences. Although the article does not focus on this aspect of the conflict, the reader needs to be aware of it, as without taking it into account, the reader would not be able to fully examine the main topic of the article, i.e. continuously deteriorating relations between Romero and the members of the Episcopal Conference of Salvador, who did not accept his pastoral vision realized in San Salvador. Their criticism of Romero’s actions, which often took inappropriate forms, included accusations of promoting leftist and Marxist ideology by Romero and the priests working with him. Purely personal issues also played a substantial role in the escalation of the conflict. Unfavourable information distributed in Salvador by the Church authorities reached Rome and caused numerous conflicts in Romero’s relations with the Vatican officials. This was all the more distressing to Romero inasmuch as he tried to be faithful to his own conscience and the teaching of the Magisterium of the Church. The analysis of the conflict within the Church, whose participant was Oscar Romero, is preceded by the explanation of the socio-political context of that time. The article ends by pointing to the truth and the Gospel, which were a way to regain the lost unity according to Archbishop Romero
