Summary/Abstract: This article is analyzing one of the biggest examples of collective violence at afootball stadium in Port Said, Egypt. Seventy four people died and over five hundredwere injured on February 1st 2012 in clashes between supporters of home team Al-Masry and Al-Ahly. This case study analyzes not only the actual clashes betweensupporters of both teams but also examines political context of the tragedy. Footballsupporters played an important role in the regime change a bit earlier during the ArabSpring in 2011. The supporters of Al-Masry were loyal to Mubarak´s regime, supportersof Cairo based Al-Ahly were in lead of the anti-regime protests. Considering thatsupporting a football team has always been a way of showing ones political views inEgypt, otherwise legally impossible, the political context and theoretical background ofCharles Tilly are key elements for analyzing what happened at Port Said stadium.
