Summary/Abstract: In the era of knowledge-based economy employees with high potential have the greatest chances for employment, that means those who have a good education, speak foreign languages and are able to successfully use new technologies. According to the opinion of Polish employers, all these conditions are met by the representatives of Generation Y. However, due to the easily noticeable flaws of employees of the younger generation, such as: low levels of loyalty, lack of humility in the face of authority, inability to concentrate on a long period of time, organizations are experiencing difficulties in encouraging them to use their full potential. This article attempts to answer the question what problems the employers will have to face when managing this group of employees. In the theoretical part, the article presents the importance of sustainable personnel management; characterizes the features of Generation Y basing on the analysis of literature and expert opinion; analyzes selected issues concerning the management of this difficult generation of workers. The last part of the article presents the results of a study conducted in 2013 as a part of the “learning organization 2.0” project conducted by the portal Interia.pl and Jagiellonian University Wszechnica. The aim of the study was to determine the expectations and beliefs of the young Generation Y employees regarding the management’s approach to employees and working conditions prevailing in IT companies.
