Summary/Abstract: Life cycle assessment (LCA) is a method enabling environmental assessment of products which is based on the whole life cycle, from product production, through its utilisation to waste formation and management. The results of LCA can be a basis for selection of solutions beneficial to the environment in product design. However, the assessment of multi- functional systems is difficult because of the inconsistencies identified in the methodology of allocation of environmental burden. A unified methodology of solutions used in life cycle assessment of multi-functional systems is proposed in the paper: the allocation on the basis of physical or socio-economic factors and system expansion that requires marginal technology identification with regard to market mechanisms.
