Summary/Abstract: This article is an attempt to analyze the phenomenon of presence-absence of the Soviet period in today's Lithuania and the rapport with its heritage. It offers an analysis of the present assessments of the Soviet period in Lithuania stating that, paradoxically, this epoch though close to us in time, is badly known. Its stereotypical definitions are considered as sufficient. Important lacunas are felt in the human sciences of Lithuania, therefore the author wished to question the popular statement that we do remember Soviet times too well to analyse them more deeply. In order to fill in the breaches of knowledge of the Soviet epoch, this article concerns a circle of questions an answer to which would make this period more clear and its evaluations more serious and more tolerant. In this respect, the most important thing is to find definitions for three basic categories - the history-memory-heritage of the Soviet period. Moreover, it is necessary to go deep into the obstacles that impede fighting the stereo-typical image of this era, to find lacking nuances of the knowledge that we already possess, and the possible ways to look at it sine ira et studio that could be proposed by the modern didactics of history. In other words, not only to consider how the Soviet period found itself in a marginal position, but also by what means we could take it out "into the day's light".
