Summary/Abstract: The article provides a story on the establishment of the parish of Santaika and the construction of the church in the diocese of Vilkaviškis. The history of founding the parish and building the church is regarded as a characteristic example of the foundation of a small parish in the countryside in the first half of the 20th century. According to the available documentary material, parishioners led a conservative way of life, observing old traditional customs. For the most part the farmers of the district continued to be involved in parishional activities as far as their economic and social life was concerned. In the villages of Užnemunė (the northern parts to the south of the Nemunas River) traditions of folk architecture were alive. The methods of erecting folk buildings used to be applied in constructing not only a small temporary wooden church, but also a brick one, the project of which was prepared by a professional architect.
