Summary/Abstract: Linde and Osiński are the authors of two 19th-century dictionaries providing documentation for the Polish language, but employing completely different conventions. The difference can be seen even on the level of the title, what is not without significance in this case. Linde declares in the title that what he describes is language, while Osiński – that he describes speech. The article attempts at determining how to interpret their choices. The paper provides a detailed analysis of the way both lexicographers describe language and speech, which is followed by a commentary on the two dictionaries’ titles. The titles are also considered in the context of methodological assumptions made by each of the linguists, as well as in the view of the historical-cultural situation of the time.
