Summary/Abstract: The paper discusses the names of gemstones in two dictionaries: the {Dictionary of Adam Mickiewicz’s Language} [‘Słownik języka Adama Mickiewicza’] and the Vilnius Dictionary [‘Słownik wileński’]. Particular attention is paid to different treatment given to the examined names in lexicographic sources that vary greatly as far as their function and origin are concerned. The analysis attempts at the same time at showing the extent to which the poetic conceptualization of minerals and gemstones typical of the romantic worldview is mirrored in dictionary entries, both in the dictionary that treats Mickiewicz’s texts merely as one of the sources and in the dictionary whose aim is to provide a comprehensive treatment of the lexis used by the poet. It is worth noting that only the names which receive the same or similar illustration in both dictionaries have been excerpted. Confrontation of the range of the semantic field of gemstones in both sources aims at demonstrating if was one of the cases in which “the [Vilnius – M.A.] dictionary’s authors, having decided to use quotations as illustrative material, favoured Mickiewicz as a great poet, an authority universally respected for his literary, linguistic and stylistic accomplishment” (cf. Walczak 1991, 72).
