Global security environment is profoundly complicated in the midst of general chaos and instability. Following the end of the Cold War in 1989, the world has entered in a period of rapid change accelerated by globalisation. As the scope of the international power balance changes, the world is presently in a period of transformation manipulated by the US, a unique hegemonic power. This status quo is also maintained by the EU and other Western partners.
