Summary/Abstract: One of the challenges of the global economy of the twenty-first century is a redefinition of its development model, which favors the progressive reduction of social and economic inequalities. The recent financial crisis has highlighted the imbalance in the economy – environment – society system. In that situation the sustainable development (SD) is considered as an alternative to other concepts of development at multiple levels, namely, the state level, regional integration associations level and also at the global economy level. The aim of the study is to assess the coherence of SD activities of EU, compared to similar global initiatives. The analysis shows that due to significant development disparities, the CSD concept, is more efficient in monitoring the progress of SD than specific quantitative indicators of the MDGs.
