National museum: visions and reality

Summary/Abstract: The article addresses the concept of a national museum in the 1st half of the 20th century in Lithuania and the attempts lo establish such a museum in the 1920s. The discussion on the peripeteia of the establishment of a national museum includes endeavours to coordinate (a) an attitude to a museum as a temple of the nation's struggle and sufferings, and (b) the concept of a museum as an institution representing the country's culture. A review of such attempts revealed a two-fold character of the Vytautas the Great Museum. The museum's history is associated with the mentality of Lithuanian society, the peculiarities of a historical and cultural consciousness.
